Jones on Tour continues on its sojourn around Wales, to highlight some of the locations, activities and attractions we love and believe you will enjoy here in our wonderful country.
Once more, this is not a comprehensive selection, just a random sample, a brief snapshot if you will, of what we like and makes us proud to be ‘o Gymru’. And whilst we’re at it, we’ll give you a heads up on where to find our Jones o Gymru products, and make your visit that extra special!
This time we’ll head for the beautiful seafront University town of Aberystwyth, moving southwards from Dyffryn Conwy, stop over at Y Llew Coch in Dinas Mawddwy - enjoy the welcome!
Now there are a variety of scenic ways to get to our ultimate destination, but we’ll take a slight detour and head for the beautiful Aberdyfi, purely to enjoy the wonderful greens at Aberdovey Golf Club - one of Ian Woosnam’s favourite courses. Stop by and enjoy the views from the clubhouse and pick up some Jones supplies before heading further south! On your way, don’t forget to pop in and see the awesome team at Caffi Cletwr, a community shop and cafe.
The Dyfi National Nature Reserve at Ynyslas, between Machynlleth and Aberystwyth is also well worth a visit, with so much to see at any time of year.
There are many things to see and do around Aberystwyth. Here’s just a few of our suggestions:
All aboard for an unforgettable scenic Vale of Rheidol 12 mile train journey from Aberystwyth to Devil's Bridge, travelling up 700ft through some of Wales’ most spectacular scenery on a historic narrow-gauge steam railway. If you fancy a little stay around Devil’s Bridge, then look no further than the Hafod Hotel , another great stop over to replenish your Jones stock!! Explore the ancient ruins and beautiful gardens of Hafod Estate, located nearby.
Visit the Aberystwyth Castle ruins, which date back to the 13th century.
A leisurely stroll or cycle along the Aberystwyth Promenade is recommended, with stunning sea views on one side and a wide variety of hotels to choose from on the other. The North Beach and seafront is a focal point of the town and a favourite attraction for visitors and locals alike - and those who just want to relax by the seaside.A wonderful place to just sit and take it all in.
Hike to the top of Constitution Hill, which offers panoramic views of the coast. Or, for a more leisurely approach, head for the Aberystwyth Cliff Railway, which takes visitors from the seafront to the top of Constitution Hill.
Visit the National Library of Wales, housing the nation's treasures. From books to art, manuscripts to audiovisual archives come and discover the story of Wales.
A stroll around the town centre is time well spent, with plenty of interesting independent shops, cafes, and restaurants. Ultracomida has a fabulous array of wines and cheese. Rummers wine bar is well worth a visit ( look out for some Jones stuff!) Don’t forget to pick up some fresh, local and organic milk and milkshakes from Llaethdy Jenkins at the vending machine opposite Marks & Spencers. You won’t be disappointed!!
Keep an eye out for what’s on at the award winning Aberystwyth Arts Centre , one of the UK's largest arts centres - part of Aberystwyth University, it is recognised as a 'national flagship for the arts'.In the autumn, look out for the Aberystwyth Comedy Festival a popular event staged across various venues around the town. Canolfan Arad Goch is known as a local creative centre and another venue to look out for what’s on.
And once you’re done, relax and unwind at the fabulous Plas Nanteos country house hotel just outside Aberystwyth, before considering travelling a little further south, about 16 miles, to visit the beautiful Georgian Harbour town of Aberaeron . If food and drink is your thing, then the popular Harbourmaster boutique hotel, bar and restaurant is a must visit! If you're looking for breakfast, a sandwich for lunch on the beach, or for something to cook for dinner, then pop in to Watson & Pratts shop for some real local and seasonal inspiration.
A trip down Aberystwyth really does have so much to offer, with so much to see and do. We hope you have the opportunity to do so this summer and have time to reflect on a great visit, especially with a nice cold drink in one hand and a bag of Jones Crisps in the other!
